How long have you been doing what you do, and how did you become a Financial Coach?
To answer this question, it’s probably best that I share with you the defining moments, and a resulting “compelling story”, that brought me to where I am today – coaching people like you on exactly what to do to break free from debt and take control of their financial future. There are two defining moments in my life. The first happened in 2008.
My mother had worked a very physically demanding job in a nursing home for over 30 years. She was two years from retirement when the stock market crashed in 2008. She found out the hard way her investments were mismanaged when she lost 40% of her retirement savings value. She had trusted that her financial advisor was taking care of her money and never asked him any questions. To be fair to the advisor, my mom didn’t know what to ask him, so she allowed him to do what he thought was best to take care of her money since “he was the expert”. When I found out about my mom’s situation, I was furious and outraged because I knew how hard my mother was working. She was exhausted physically and mentally. I believed she was ignored because her retirement balance was not as large as someone with more wealth.
As a result, my mother had to continue to work an additional 10 years and was not able to retire until 2018. So instead of being able to retire at the age of 65 as she had planned, she was forced to work until she was almost 75, which means she missed out on doing many things she had hoped to do during retirement. Her body was battered and exhausted because she had to work longer than she was physically able to keep up with. I knew I didn’t want to be in that position ever in my life, nor should any other woman. If my mother had known about how money worked, she could have avoided this entire situation.
Also around that time, my husband was laid off. It took him almost 18 months to find another position due to the state of the industry he worked in. Thankfully we had been good at saving but since we had a lot of debt we burned through all of our savings just to stay afloat. Around that time, our oldest child graduated high school and was accepted to his first-choice college. As a result of our financial situation, we had to tell our child that we could not pay our portion of his college tuition and he would have to attend a less expensive school. This may not seem like something that should change the path of your life and yet it did. I had to see the look of disappointment in our son’s eyes, a son that had done everything we had expected him to do: good grades, played sports – not given us any behavior issues, and I had to tell him that we didn’t do our part to ensure his future.
Disappointing my son was one of the worst moments of my life. It wasn’t until I myself had become a financial coach and started to understand how money works, that I understood that my spending and savings habits were insufficient to deal with the crap that life threw at us. We did everything we were taught by our parents, who in retrospect had less money education than we did and as a result we were on the same path our parents were on. Working until we were 75 or dropped from exhaustion and illness, whichever came first.
Because of these life events, I decided to change my career path, and I became trained in financial coaching. In 2010 I left my position as a school teacher to help others financially full time.
I never wanted to disappoint my children again, so I decided to work on a plan to get us out of debt. We started to strategically plan for tough situations, so we’d never be blindsided again. We learned how to tell our money what to do, and for the first time we were in the driver’s seat of our future financially. I started to wonder how many other people were in the same boat. How many other people were unprepared for the unexpected?
I began to talk to people about debt management and sitting down with them to show them how they could get out of debt and have money to live their dream life. I had a couple in their late 40’s sit in my office and they had lost so much hope they were ready to give up. I was their last stop before declaring bankruptcy. I put together a customized plan for them that showed them they were going to be debt free in nine years. They started to cry, and I realized I could help restore hope with my clients. Now I am dedicated to helping others reach their financial goals, helping women become empowered with their finances, and take ownership of their money.
The first thing I do with my clients is work on their financial mindset. Helping them to learn how to make their money work harder for them and helping them learn how to recognize and avoid common money mistakes. I always ask my clients: “If I could give you a million dollars, or a penny that doubles daily for 30 days, which would you choose?” Everyone incorrectly picks the million dollars. But if you start with a penny and double it every day for a month, you would have just over $5.3 million dollars. Not understanding how money compounds is a common money mistake that helps drive people further into debt and makes it seem hard to save money.
The average person will earn and, more importantly, have flow through their hands more than $2.4 million dollars during their working life, and yet most end up broke.
Half of all the people in the US 65 and older are living 100% on social security. They have no other money. Where did the $2.4 million dollars go? Most people do not understand how to manage their money. They live paycheck to paycheck. People are spending money on expensive coffees, without understanding what a difference that money would make on the quality of their future if they saved and invested it instead. Who deserves a better-quality retirement life; You or that coffee shop CEO? I help my clients see where their money is going and help them make a plan on how it can work harder for them.
We work on getting clients out of debtor’s jail. By having so much debt you take away your options, like where you can live or if you can go on vacation. We all should make decisions about what we can and can’t spend money on. Most of us do not. We spend often without any thought at all. That sentences you to living a life you don’t want, with no freedom. Debt controls your lifestyle choices. I sit down with you and go over all of your debt and create a debt elimination plan by reallocating money to pay down debt and create savings and retirement plans to allow you live your ideal life. I also teach how the same compounding effect that works against you in debt can work for you in retirement savings.
As we plan for and start building your financial assets, we need to protect your greatest most important asset of all – YOU and your ability to earn! We talk about how to protect you, so you can build a future.
My clients can expect to become debt free, empowered to create the life they want to live, and feel secure about their financial futures. I have created a signature program that allows you to be the boss of your money. Wealth is not just for the 1%, abundance is for everyone. I can teach you how to obtain it.
Who are your clients?
I work with people just like you who are sick and tired of being in debt, people who want to take control of their future, and feel hope about their retirement.
What makes you different from other Financial Coaches?
First and foremost, I am a teacher at heart. I believe my role is to show you, not judge you, because everyone without the right money education makes the same mistakes. When you know better, you do better.
You also get a coach who has been where you are. I don’t only have book knowledge, I have made the same choices with the same lack of knowledge you did so I understand where you are and how you got there. And even more importantly, I understand how to get out of it. You need four things to get out of your situation:
- Desire
- Knowledge
- Discipline
- Coaching
If you bring genuine desire, I bring the rest.
What type of personality do you work best with and what is expected of me?
The Financial Freedom For Life workshops, products and programs were created for people who are dead serious about creating a financially secure future.
It means not avoiding answering your phone for fear it’s a debt collector or worrying that you will have to work until you drop. It means no more fighting with your partner about money (or lack of money). You can put systems in place within a few months (sometimes weeks!), which will eventually lead you to having the freedom to choose: where you live, where and when you vacation and when you get to stop working.
Being a person who is tenacious myself, I’m known to work best with other focused people; people who are committed to their success no matter what, who are super-ready to get going and just want to know exactly what steps to take to achieve financial freedom. My clients often tell me – “just tell me what to do and I’ll do it!” Consider what you’ll do with me to be a high-octane crash course on everything you need to know to about how money works. No excuses anymore, just a very different way of thinking and full support while you achieve this incredibly exciting goal: always doing the right thing with your money.
